WASHINGTON, D.C. (Thursday, November 20, 2008) - The following statement was issued today by Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) President and CEO Jim Greenwood following the election of Congressman Henry Waxman (D-CA) as the new Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee of the House of Representatives:

“BIO congratulates Chairman Waxman on his new position.  As Chairman, Congressman Waxman will oversee a wide array of legislative issues that relate to biotechnology innovation.  We look forward to working with the Chairman and the full committee to create a public policy framework that helps enable our nation’s biotechnology community to continue to develop groundbreaking therapies, cures and applications that help save and extend the lives of patients suffering from debilitating diseases, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, expand sources of renewable fuels and increase agricultural sustainability while creating high-skill, high wage, green jobs.

“During my twelve years in the House of Representatives, I worked closely with Congressman Waxman on the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health.  I look forward to continuing our friendship and the spirit of collaboration we enjoyed while we served together.

“We also commend Congressman John Dingell (D-MI) for his decades of service as Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee.  We look forward to working closely with Congressman Dingell and his staff during the new Congress.”
