BIO Names Rep. Nancy Johnson a Legislator of the Year

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 8, 2003) — The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) today honors U.S. Rep. Nancy Johnson (R-Conn.) as a 2002-2003 “Legislator of the Year.” The award will be presented at a plenary dinner at the Willard Hotel in connection with BIO’s annual Legislative Day event.

“BIO honors Representative Johnson for her thoughtful work to remedy current reimbursement problems within Medicare’s Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System,” said BIO President Carl B. Feldbaum. “Her efforts in this area reflect her commitment to protecting patient access to innovative biotechnology medicines.

“In her capacity as Chairman of the House Ways and Means Health Subcommittee, Representative Johnson has also championed Medicare reform that would apply market-based structures to deliver a prescription drug benefit to the nation’s elderly and disabled populations,” Feldbaum added.

More than 200 congressional meetings with more than 175 biotechnology industry representatives are expected to be conducted on Capitol Hill during the BIO Legislative Day event. Participants will discuss a number of important biotechnology issues, including reimbursement problems within the Medicare hospital outpatient setting, tax and capital formation, Medicare reform, regulatory concerns surrounding follow-on biologics and reducing trade barriers for American farmers.

BIO represents more than 1,000 biotechnology companies, academic institutions, state biotechnology centers and related organizations in all 50 U.S. states. BIO members are involved in the research and development of health-care, agricultural, industrial and environmental biotechnology products.
