The Council for Biotechnology Information Announces A New Executive Director of Public Information

WASHINGTON, D.C. (September 21, 2000) The Council for Biotechnology Information (CBI) today announced that Linda Thrane has accepted the position of Executive Director.

As Executive Director of the Council, Thrane will direct, coordinate and communicate activities to expand the CBI’s biotechnology information program. She will be located in Washington, DC, at the headquarters of the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), beginning November 1.

We are delighted to have someone of Linda’s caliber and experience. Her ability to develop strategies for the Council, as well as serving as a highly knowledgeable spokesperson will greatly enhance our work to explain to stakeholders and consumers the benefits of crops and foods derived through biotechnology, said Carl B. Feldbaum, President of BIO.

The Council for Biotechnology Information is a coalition of eight leading life-science companies including Aventis CropScience, BASF, Bayer, Dow Chemical, DuPont, Monsanto, Novartis, Zeneca Ag Products, as well as two trade associations, the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) and the American Crop Protection Association (ACPA).

The Council’s mission is to share information about the benefits of crops and foods derived through biotechnology. It works with existing organizations to establish a dialogue with food industry, health professionals, academia, scientists, and other interested parties.

Offering a few words of welcome, Bob Woods, President of Zeneca Ag Products, Inc. and Chairman of the CBI’s governing board, said, The Council is at the forefront of the industry’s efforts to provide information on the benefits and safety of biotechnology, and we are delighted to have Linda become a part of this initiative.

Thrane’s experience includes over 25 years of strategic communications. Most recently, as Vice President of Public Affairs Cargill, Inc., Thrane led their crisis and issues management, and directed their corporate communications. Cargill, Inc. is an agriculture, food, financial, and industrial company that has operations located in 59 countries.

Prior to joining Cargill, Thrane was an editorial writer at the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Other career highlights include her service as associate director the Minneapolis Petroleum Council, and as a reporter with the United Press International’s St. Paul bureau.
