Wizard's Stackhouse and The President's Challenge to Host Fitness Clinics at HealthFest
WHEN: | Saturday, June 21 and Sunday June 22 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. each day |
WHERE: | HealthFest 2003, on the National Mall, between 3rd and 4th Street |
WHAT: | A specially designed 2,500 sq. foot basketball court at HealthFest 2003 where visitors can shoot hoops with Wizards star Jerry Stackhouse, meet other star athletes, including Mytics' Chamique Holdsclaw and players from DC United, take fitness challenges for cool prizes from Nike and Spalding, and learn about eating healthy from a celebrity chef. These activities are part of other fun, family-focused events that the public can enjoy during both days of HealthFest 2003, which brings together more than 100 patient advocacy groups, healthcare providers, volunteer health organizations and the area's leading biotechnology companies to offer visitors of all ages the opportunity to learn about preventative care, healthcare and the future of medicine and biotechnology. |
WHY: | Promoting healthy living ideals is important for athletes Jerry Stackhouse and Chamique Holdsclaw, volunteers with the President's Challenge, a program of the President's Council on Physical Fitness, and Food Network Chef Kathleen Daelemans. In addition to gathering tips on staying healthy through challenging workout sessions and nutritious cooking demos, HealthFest 2003 visitors will also learn firsthand about the latest advancements in science and medical research and the multitude of ways in which biotechnology affects our lives. "Taking the time to stay fit and healthy is important and so is education about the different options in preventive care available to us," says Stackhouse, who founded the Triple Threat Foundation (TTF) to promote the importance of daily physical activity and encourage behavioral changes that lessen the risk of diabetes and other serious medical conditions caused by obesity. Stackhouse explains that although he's a professional athlete who keeps his body in top condition, genetically he is susceptible to diabetes, and that's why he is working hard to fight it. "I lost two sisters to this disease," recalls Stackhouse. "It was a devastating experience for me, which is why I want to help others by teaching them to stay healthy and talking to them about the latest advancements in diabetes research that have resulted in a new lease on life for many." |
