Co-Founder Of Alabama Biotechnology Association Receives Leadership Award

SEATTLE, Washington, (May 19, 1999) Dr. Thomas Dooley, presiding officer and co-founder of the Biotechnology Association of Alabama (BAA), received the Biotechnology Industry Organization's (BIO) Innovative Leadership Award today at the BIO '99 International Meeting and Exhibition in Seattle.

The award recognizes and encourages efforts to promote the growth of the biotechnology industry, especially outside the established biotech clusters in the United States. Less than one year after organizing, the BAA drew more than 150 people to its first annual meeting.

"Thanks to Dooley's leadership, Alabama will play a significant role in the growth and development of the biotechnology industry," said BIO Executive Director Ray Briscuso. "This is an entrepreneurial industry, and it takes an entrepreneur like Dooley to unite the business development community, the universities and the state."

The Biotechnology Industry Organization represents more than 850 biotechnology companies, academic institutions and state biotechnology centers in 47 states and 26 nations. BIO members are involved in research and development of health care, agricultural, industrial and environmental biotechnology products.
