Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter Issues Proclamation for BIO Superhero Day, Monday, June 15
Washington, D.C. (April 23, 2015) – Today, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter declared Monday, June 15, 2015 as BIO Superhero Day through a proclamation issued at a joint press conference with the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau and Pennsylvania Bio. Leaders from each organization gathered to discuss the economic impact of the 2015 BIO International Convention®, returning to Philadelphia June 15-18, to highlight the tremendous impact the biotech industry has on the region and preview BIO 2015.
"The last time we hosted this event in 2005 was a smashing success for our region's biotech industry, helping to shape Philadelphia's image as a progressive hub for innovation. We are ecstatic that the BIO International Convention is coming back to our city and our hospitality community stands ready to roll out the red carpet for the more than 15,000 projected attendees who will generate $43.3 million in economic impact for our city," said Jack Ferguson, President & CEO, Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau.
“We are extremely excited to be bringing the 2015 BIO International Convention back to Philadelphia,” said Jim Greenwood, President & CEO of BIO. “In addition to the economic benefits to the city, the BIO International Convention is a unique opportunity to showcase the region’s world class biotechnology ecosystem on a global stage. We also will be honoring the superheroes of our industry – the patients, the researchers and the entrepreneurs whose hard work and sacrifice make it possible for the biotechnology industry to heal, fuel and feed the world.”
In addition to recognizing the everyday biotech superhero, Greenwood also discussed the networking and educational opportunities available to BIO 2015 attendees. BIO will host a Kickoff Concert Monday, June 15th featuring Philadelphia standouts such as Boyz II Men, The Roots and Kool and the Gang. On the programming side, attendees will hear from legendary journalist Tom Brokaw and leading digital health expert Dr. Eric Topol.
“The BIO Convention is an opportunity to showcase Pennsylvania’s global leadership in the life sciences,” said Christopher P. Molineaux, President & CEO, Pennsylvania Bio. “We are honored to serve our region’s thriving life sciences community and to present its business and scientific prowess in this industry event.”
